A Promise Made to a Jellyfish

They say it all began with him hearing a song. It was not the song of sirens luring ships onto rocks, nor the song of wind in the rigging. It was the song of the deep. Quiet, monotonous, made of the creaking of tectonic plates, the sighs of underwater currents, and the shimmering hum that emanates from the very heart of the planet. Only those who have already half-forgotten how to breathe air can hear it. His name was Douva, and he was a Leviathan – but not fierce like Raksha, nor life-giving like Arevir. He was.. a Leviathan of silence. His element was not the storm, but the calm ; not eruption, but stillness. He lived on the border where the white sands of the beaches of Insumosu ended and the abyss of Khalnossa began. He watched the waves roll in and roll out, like the repetitive handwriting of an invisible scribe ; he watched the spiral jellyfish dance in columns of moonlight – slow, graceful, meaningless, and perfect in their meaninglessness. He looked at the sea, and the sea looked into him, and in this silent dialogue, a feeling was born for which the Leviathans had no name. Longing ? Love ? A desire to merge ? One night, when Thalassa's two moons converged in the sky, forming a pale, double eye, he approached the very edge. The water lapped at his paws, and he understood that he could no longer remain separate – to be the one who watches from the outside, a spectator in his own novel. He took a step forward, then another. The water received him as it receives everything – without delight, without resistance. It embraced him, and that embrace was cold, salty, and infinitely honest. He walked to the bottom – not because he could not swim, but because he wanted to descend, to shed the skin of the observer, to become part of the picture he loved so much. And as he descended, something strange happened to him. His scales did not get wet – they dissolved, becoming part of the water column. His fins did not paddle – they spread out like ink in a glass. His bones became lighter than seaweed, his heartbeat slowing until it matched the rhythm of the deep currents. He was not drowning – he was dissolving. And at the very moment when his consciousness should have faded into nothingness, he saw something incredible – not one miracle, but myriads of them. A spiral jellyfish, immense, ancient, glowing from within with a cold, phosphorescent light. She was not a creature, but an idea. An idea of peace, of infinite falling-flight, of a form that exists only in movement and in the absence of bones. She was the sea, embodied in one perfect gesture. They did not speak. What need was there for words ? They had no words – but there was a promise. It hung between them like a strand of a jellyfish's pearlescent slime.

I will become

Thought what had once been Douva. Or was it the sea that thought it ?

Become

Answered the jellyfish's radiance. Or was it the simple current that answered ?

And he became

He became the saltiness on the lips of a fisherman who had hooked his finger on a hook ; he became the cool shiver that runs along a diver's skin when he touches the depths. He became that very longing that gnaws at a sailor by the fire in a port tavern when he looks at the door and thinks of a home he does not have – because his home is the horizon. He became the whisper heard in a seashell held to the ear ; he became the memory of the sea. The memory of how to be whole and how to be fragmented. And the jellyfish ? She simply drifted. As always. She was the promise that need not be kept, because it was already fulfilled. She was his eternal witness. Each slow, hypnotic pulse of her bell was a nod :

I remember

I am here

You – are here

We – are one

And now, if you ever find yourself on the shore of Khalnossa on a moonless night, step up to the water – do not make noise – listen not with your ears, but with your skin, and you will feel him. Not a spirit, not a monster, but the mood of the sea. A sadness that does not wound – a silence that sings – a love that asks for nothing but to be part of an endless, salty, dark whole. This is Douva. The Leviathan who kept his promise. He drowned, and in that drowning, he found the only form that had always suited him – the form of the absence of form. The form of an eternal "yes" spoken into the abyss.

He – is the promise made to a jellyfish

And the sea – is the eternal, silent answer.
